Amsterdam, The Netherlands – The University of Liverpool,
in partnership with online learning partner and industry leader
Laureate Online Education, has spearheaded an exciting new development
in 100% online Masters programmes: personalised programme options
that allow students to select modules for a virtually ‘bespoke’
Masters.
While maintaining the same high academic standards and excellent
reputation that have attracted over 2600 participants in the past
5 years, Laureate has restructured their MBA and MSc in IT programmes
for increased flexibility – not just in time and place of
study, but in curriculum. Students may now choose to customise their
programme by selecting from a rich, varied array of electives; those
with a very specific career focus may also enrol on one of two MBA
Specialisation Tracks (Marketing or Finance & Accounting), or
three MSc in IT Specialisation Tracks (in Internet Computing, Information
Security or Software Engineering). A new programme – the Master
of Science in Information Systems Management – has been created
to meet the emerging need for those with specialist management knowledge
who are working within Information Systems-rich environments.
“We’re responding to feedback we’ve received
from our current and former students, as well as to changes in the
way Masters degrees are being developed, delivered and marketed,”
says Yoram M. Kalman, Senior Vice President for Academics for Laureate.
“What we hear is that our students want to have more influence
on their own learning outcomes,” he says, explaining the expanded
choice of electives now on offer gives students an important sense
of control in accessing the knowledge that they need and want. Students
with a specific career focus may prefer to control their own learning
outcomes through the choice of a Specialisation Track, in which
elective modules are pre-selected to ensure specialist knowledge,
and the final dissertation must focus on the area of specialisation.
The MSc in Information Systems Management is a new programme, introduced
in response to an educational trend recognised by Laureate. In the
past several years, an increasing number of IT professionals were
enrolling on the University of Liverpool/Laureate MBA programme,
as they were seeking broad management skills and knowledge to help
them in their IT careers. However, the case studies and models of
the MBA reflected a more general business environment. The MSc in
Information Systems Management is a ‘hybrid’ course
that bridges the study of business and technology, providing IT
professionals with updated technical, as well as management knowledge,
with examples taken from the context of IS-rich environments.
Taught modules for this updated, expanded programme offering begin
in January 2006.
