AMSTERDAM - April 1, 2004 - Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:
SLVN), the world's leading international provider of higher education,
today announced its entry into the rapidly growing market for online
higher education outside of the United States, with the acquisition
of K.I.T. e-Learning, B.V. (K.I.T.). In conjunction with the acquisition,
a 10-year agreement with The University of Liverpool was signed.
Based in Amsterdam, K.I.T. eLearning is the exclusive worldwide
distance-learning partner of the University of Liverpool and specializes
in delivery of online graduate programs to working-adult students
in over 80 countries. K.I.T.'s Amsterdam offices will become the
headquarters for Sylvan's online activities outside the United States.
Eli Zybert, CEO of K.I.T. says: "The acquisition by Sylvan
proves that K.I.T. belongs amongst the leading providers for online
Master programmes in the international arena. This deal will give
a positive impulse to our company. Together with the University
of Liverpool we will significantly expand our offerings and introduce
new programmes, delivering online postgraduate degrees in management,
healthcare and IT."
K.I.T. and The University of Liverpool launched the first Internet-based
degrees in Europe four years ago in an exclusive partnership. Today,
about 1,600 working-adult students from more than 80 countries,
including Canada, China, the Netherlands, UK, and US are enrolled
in the MBA and MSc programmes they offer.
